Ephesus is located in countryside modern-day Selçuk town of İzmir city and approximately 20 km (12 miles) from Kuşadası and 5 km (3 miles) inland from the Aegean Sea. The site rests between two mountains. The Ionian Greek colonies invaded the Asia Minor following the Trojan war. Their mythological founder of Ephesus in Greek Culture was Androklos and their first city was established around the temple of Artemis. The region was controlled by Lydians and then Persians. Alexander the Great gave them their freedom. Later, Lysimachus, a general of Alexander the Great, needed to move the city to a new location for a new harbour.
Although the predominant culture and daily language was Greek, due to its high maritime income potential and a very fertile hinterland, it became a metropolitan center for many ethnicities from different religious backgrounds, Greek, Egyptian, Roman cults, Judaism and Christianity were widespread beliefs among its residents. However, In the 3rd century, it was attacked by the Gothic tribes and an earthquake around 270 AD caused significant damage. Despite efforts to rebuild, the harbor eventually silted up, dragging the city to its decline. Although conquered by Turks and retaken by the Eastern Roman Empire in the eleventh century; In 1304, Ephesus fell to the Turks once more, marking the end of its ancient prominence.
Today most of the visible ruins which were restored date back to the Roman Imperial and late Roman times. Visitors can explore landmarks such as the State Agora, Odeon, Memmius Monument, The Currettes’ Street, Celsius Library, Commercial Agora, The Great Theatre and the Harbor Street.
